     1. What is this site?
top | bottom

Modernhistory.org is my creative outlet on the internet. This is where I can share art and photos, creative writing, and anything else I dabble in. I designed both the front and back end of the site myself. This is currently v2.0 of Modernhistory.org. I used the following resources in my site design:

A tweaked version of Owen Briggs' Sane CSS Styles template for the typography.
phpThumb for the dynamic thumbnails.
Keith Devens' PHP Calendar for the sketch journal.

     2. Who are you?

Here is some info about me:

Age: 26
Location: Toronto, Canada

2005, U of T (East Asian Studies/Urban Studies)
1998, Sheridan College (Classical Animation)

Currently a student at University of Toronto
2005, Magazine Production (Trader Media) in Toronto
2004, English teacher (Nova Group) and illustrator, in Tokyo
2002-2003, Magazine Production (Trader Media) in Toronto

     3. What is the 'Random Mosaic'?
top | bottom

It's a way to browse the site. The mosaic consists of random thumbnails from all the images on the site. Each thumbnail leads back to its gallery and image. Click the 'Refresh' link to refresh the mosaic.

     4. Can I contact you about ________?

You bet, as long as it ain't spam or a pyramid scheme. My contact info is:

Email: jeff {at} modernhistory {dot} org
ICQ: 40714432
AIM: jeeeeff
MSN: jeeff {at} rogers {dot} com (also my alternate email)

     5. Are you available for illustration work?
top | bottom

Yes I am. My studies leave plenty of time for illustration work. If you have a project that you'd like to discuss, please email me. I'm happy to give estimates of price and schedule.

I'm also open to cool non-paying projects-- really unique and well-developed ideas, ideally with some tangible work to see. However, no guarantees; my time is valuable to me. No vaguely imagined comic books please.

     6. Can I use this drawing on my website, zine, rave flyer, etc?

My work is protected by a Creative Commons license.

Creative Commons License

It's like a copyright updated for the digital age. You can repost/reprint my work as long as it is unaltered, properly credited, and used for non-commercial purposes only (a link back to my site would be nice too!). This means that if you run a commercial website, sell your zine, or charge admission to your rave, you should email me first and maybe we can work something out.

     7. How about this photo?
top | bottom

See #5.

     8. Do you have prints available for sale?

Yes! Below each photo or drawing you'll find information about whether prints are available, and what size(s). Click on the print size(s) available for more info about price, shipping, etc.

I use photographic prints from the Afga D-lab2 printer at Pikto in Toronto. Currently, prints are done on demand rather than in editions (essentially everything's in 1st edition).

     9. What media do you use?
top | bottom

Since my teens I've always been mostly into drawing rather than painting. I've always used lots of pens, markers, and pencil crayons. After college I used animation (blue lead) Colerase pencils a lot. Recently I've begun using acrylics and inks too.

Alongside traditional media, the digital media are equally important. I started doing digital art in 1995 with ANSI art. Now I use a Wacom Intuos2 tablet to draw and paint directly on my computer.

     10. What inspires you/what does it mean?

That's a big question, and my answer is intentionally vague. Communication is important to me. Part of the reason I love art is that it's open-ended. I can make art with some message or theme in mind, but it's equally important how the viewer interprets it. For that reason, I'd rather not dictate. If you want to discuss, see #3.
